This is a stirring and well written historical novel about Robert the Bruce, the 13th century Scottish leader. As the first of a trilogy (at least), this book covers his youth and training as a knight, and covers his time of armed struggle both with and against the British. We meet William Wallace and read a wonderful tale of his heroic successes and failures.

Young shows again that he a deft writer of the genre, fleshing out historical characters with carefully drawn (and highly plausible) character. His research is very impressive. My one quibble is that the pace is a bit too slow. But for anyone with an interest in well written historical fiction, or with an interest in Scottish history in general or Robert the Bruce in particular, I'd highly recommend this book.

Very interesting book. Looking forward to the next one

excellent. part one of three parter
A good read
A great addition to her historical period-piece trilogy! Young writes like a seasoned pro, and she actually has not been writing this long! Comparable favorably to Jack Whyte and Bernard Cornwell!
A great story of Robert the Bruce and his years of fighting in one way or another to get Scotland to
independence and sovereignty. He is a believable character with good and bad traits. The story is
gripping and constantly keeps going on with the reader tagging along. Well written and plotted, it is
a great read.
